In Ohio for the state parks I would have to give 5 stars to East Harbor and Alum Creek State parks . But for the worst of the worst (no stars given) it goes to Heuston Woods State park, what a dump and redneck rat hole .

I can't think of any really bad places to camp in New York (though I don't do private campgrounds, just public) but it depends on what you like and expect. I found Selkirk Shores (Lake Ontario) and Glimmerglass (other end of the lake from Cooperstown) to be wastes of time - tiny, ugly "parking lot" style sites, rather out of character for the average NY state campground. Glimmerglass is not convenient to Cooperstown itself at all and there have to be private alternatives around that work out better. Also, while the scenery in the Finger Lakes (Ithaca area) is beautiful, all the state campgrounds in that region seem to be small, old and poorly run as far as camping goes. Not comfortable stays. Facilities badly in need of upgrade.

Moreau Lake (north of Albany going toward the Adirondack Park on the Northway) and Green Lakes (near Syracuse) are excellent stopovers for those making their way across the state. Beautiful, well-run and not off the beaten path. Do not miss Green Lakes in the fall.
