We would like to know everyone's favorite inland scenic by-way/highway in Oregon! We are planning a road trip in our 22' RV and would appreciate your advice. We typically travel in the Autumn months for cooler weather and less crowded campgrounds. We enjoy lakes, streams, shady campgrounds and short, easy hikes (getting up in years). We have a dog so dog-friendly is better. Best campground experiences & suggestions would also be great. Thank you all for your input!
Lots of great areas and campgrounds along the North and the South Coast. Stay midweek, (Sept better) in a few you can pull your rig right up next to the ocean.
Umpqua River Valley up to Diamond Lake / Crater Lake (Rte 138)
and don't forget WA is nice too!!! and only 5 minutes across a river. (Some good campgrounds there too). Trout Lake / My Adams is pretty nice, and close to Hood River. OR
StealthRabbit, Thank you for the info! We have been to the Southern Oregon coast area and fell in love with Harris Beach State Park. We have found that Oregon State Parks have exceptional amenities compared to CA & AZ. Washington will be the focus of our next trip!
There are so many great Oregon State Parks. If you're heading towards Crater Lake, you could check out Joseph Stewart at Lost Creek. It's a lovely campground about an hour northeast of Medford, if you're coming from that direction. When we're heading towards Portland, we often stop at Champoeg State Park, not far off of I-5 and not far South of Portland. Dog friendly large sites. Are you heading to the Coast? I like the 138/38 from Sutherlin to Reedsport. There are so many. Which area are you focusing on??
One thing you might not be aware of: most of the Indian Casino's offer free overnight (or longer) camping. One such casino is located on I-5 in Canyonville, Three Rivers Casino at Florence is on Hwy 126 just East of Florence, Mill Casino at Coos Bay Hwy 101, Chinook Winds Casino is located at Lincoln City Hwy 101(on the coast). I have visited almost every State Park (with camp grounds) on Hwy 101, between Brookings and Lincoln City and found them all to be very good. The further North you go the more crowded the campgrounds become. The State of Oregon has a map of it's camp grounds and state parks published and at one time was free for the asking. Several highways run North and South through Oregon. Hwy 101 is on the Oregon Coast, Interstate 5 is further in land, US 97 is located almost in the center of the state, and US 395 is located in the eastern part of the state. Hwy 101 probably has the most campgrounds, I-5 has campgrounds near most cities, US 97 has fewer campgrounds, but they are beautiful campgrounds, US 395 is more desolate, but the campgrounds in the Northern part of the state on this Hwy are beautiful. We have traveled all of these highways at one time or another pulling a 5th wheel trailer. Keep some extra fuel with you when visiting the eastern part of the state, some of the towns are few and far between, and some of them don't have a lot of stores open late at night. Feel free to DM me if I can help you with more info.
