Hi, we just purchase a second hand 5th wheel in great shape. It has a LOT more carpeting in the living area than our last one and I wonder if there is anything I can lay on the carpets to help with keeping them clean? We do a lot of off road camping in remote fishing lakes and unorganized campgrounds so it isn't clean like grass and concrete in most campground lots.

I've thought about laying an area rug over the carpet, but I'd be afraid of trapping moisture between the two, and tripping on loose edges.

Other than ripping up the carpeting (which is a NIGHTMARE), does anyone have any suggestions what we can do?

Take your shoes off before it gets on the carpet?

roll out a heavy duty bedsheet or $5 tarp / painter's floor cover.

I prefer walking on the canvas version, not noisy or slick.

You can add some eyelets and hooks / small bungee cords to keep it tight.

Nice to fold it up and shake it out every few days.

When you get home, you hang it over the clothes line and power wash it.

Vinyl flooring. Glue it down. And sweep it out when needed. That's what I did in my 5th wheel. I tend to go off the beaten path and had three dogs.

Yes, we do take our shoes off even in our old one that was mostly linoleum. If our dog's feet are dirty, we'll wipe them, but even so I think it will get soiled eventually.

I like the idea of a tarp or king sized flat bed sheet spread out, but if that isn't practical, I guess we'll get a carpet cleaner in every year or so to spruce it up.

Go one step farther:
Lay down some XPS insulation boards and some 1/4" (5mm) lauan underlayment first.

Good thinking.

I would remove the carpet and install tile flooring if the weight restrictions of the 5th wheel will allow it.

I/O carpeting on the ground outside the camper's door. We got a big remnant at a carpet store for very little -- something like 10x15 or so. As soon as I parked the camper, that's one of the first things I'd do, roll out the carpet and tack down the 4 corners with some 4' nails to keep it from blowing and to reduce the risk of tripping. We'd also set our coolers near the edges of it to keep it in place.

If you plan to camp on grassy areas, that might not work, as it would be hard on the grass to be covered. Where we camped we always had dirt/gravel outside the doorway, so without the carpeting we'd have been carrying in a lot of crud. We still did, just not nearly as much.

After rolling up the carpet, it was placed in the bed of the pickup, as it was too dirty -- even after shaking it out -- to go into the camper.

We do pretty much the same thing with a large carpet that we roll up at the end of the weekend and keep in the storage underneath. It really helps keep the dirt outside.

Thanks for your answers everyone!
