My daughter's boyfriend's mother who lives in Duluth was out kayaking on lake superior last weekend. She had to break thin ice with her kayak but said she had a great time. It is dangerous though, if you fall in the water, you have only a few minutes to get out before you die from hypothermia. If there is still 3' thick ice, it must be out in the deeper water. Staying near shore she was able to go several miles without problems.
