Sales of motorhomes, towable trailers down, but gas not main culprit

These are the dog days of summer at the Lazydays RV supercenter in Seffner, Fla. The huge center for motor homes and travel trailers just off Interstate 4 east of Tampa — which bills itself as the nation’s largest single-site recreational vehicle dealer — is feeling the bite of the economic downturn.

While I agree that financing and the risk in buying a RV is a problem, gas is still a huge reason and is not to be ignored. We bought an 05 Beaver Coach that has a diesel engine and are now paying $5 a gallon for diesel here in California. It can be horrific to sit there and watch the pump go as a full tank can cost us $350 right now. When we bought it, we paid $200 for a full tank.

Just go to RV parks too. People have stopped using their RV's because they can't afford it. Call an RV park and you can almost always find availability now. We just went water skiing in Central CA and brought the RV. Last year the campground was packed and the lake was pretty crowded. This year is was only half full and the management said that gas is scaring people with RV's and boats away.
