OP: What about trying this thread: http://www.city-data.com/forum/science-technology/. Since you are looking for a GPS upgrade, I wonder if folks might know over there.

Glad to help you imagardener, I have a personal interest in it too! I decided to get DH something else for his bday, but I think this xmas will be the GPS.

Garmin nuvi 200 works fine for me. I've been out on forest roads in the middle of the Bitterroot and it even recognized the roads I was on. Just keep the maps updated.

i prefer good old fashioned paper maps ...... just something about spreading it all out and getting to mapping

Don't know why this is in the camping thread, but, here it goes. If you're seeking out camping spots, leave the GPS at home, and buy yourselves some really good state maps. On these maps, there'll be little trees shaped like pines or little picnic tables (map legend). Some will be rest areas, waysides, and others will be campgrounds. I don't think a GPS unit is going to steer you to a nice campground.
