The "trend" was related to being around crowds. I've done plenty of camping in areas that I consider crowded, such as national parks, but I prefer solitude when my purpose for camping is to go fishing (should I say "catching?").

Nothing like fresh trout or any fish cooked on the fire in a good cast iron pan! We have tented and now have a 5th wheel that was just pulled from Alaska to Arizona where hubby is starting a new job. We have to live in this for at least a month while house-hunting with 3 dogs, an 11 year old, and us. Needless to say I have to work at home, so the computer internet is a necessity. But I can work wherever I have internet so it makes it nice for us to leave when we want. Good thing is I guess very few in the RV park right now One of the things that got packed though was also the tent
We have good friends that we met at the campground. Now we make it a happening to meet at that campground every Memorial Day and Labor Day. Other people we have met and camp with, we met through our dog. (he's cute) Others are friends and family. They can be fun too.
I found a great way to get together with other campers was through a group, that someone mentioned earlie,r called meetup. You just type in your zip code on their site and find out what's going on in your area. The groups I joined, have camping trips of varying degrees every week.
I enjoy camping with others and yet, I enjoy my solitude at times. When I need my peace and quiet, I find it, even within activities that are happening througout the day with the group.
But there's nothing wrong with needing to get completely away from it all. Myself, I'm just more comfortable in a group when it comes to camping out. Think, I've seen waaaaayyy too many movies, that will go unmentioned, that just wouldn't allow me to go into the woods alone.
Don't rule out camping by yourself either--it's a great way to meet people--I did last summer and was only alone one night and what a night it was--in a very sturdy picnic shelter on top of a bluff overlooking the mississippi river during a thunderstorm. I had a great book and a bottle of wine and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I also went kayaking by myself on that trip and don't know that I'd want to do it any other way from now on--I saw so much wildlife b/c it was a weekday. I'm pretty shy about talking to strangers but being alone kind of forced me to talk to people and encouraged them to talk to me.
Try talking w/ the closest RV service/ repair shop. Find out where their customers enjoy camping. Ck out the license plates when you camp. It really is a small world!
I go camping to get away from people, but some people seem to like to bring suburbia with them. They want to hang up decorations, put up a sign saying who they are and where they're from, and set everything up so it looks like a little version of their house back home. That's fine, but it's not for me!
A "necessary amenity" to one person is needless extravagance to another. I personally don't understand the point of going camping and then trying to recreate your home comforts there - satellite TV, internet, etc? Don't get that. About the only thing I require in a campground is a toilet building with a door that shuts, and a water spigot somewhere in the campground. But to a backcountry camping enthusiast, that means I'm a hopeless suburbanite!
So, not only is it hard to find people who like to camp, it's hard to find people who think "camping" means the same thing that you think it means.
Allot of people do just that because that is their home 365 days a year....More and more people are fulltiming so what you are seeing is not their weekend camper but their only home
And to the OP.. the best way to meet people that like to camp is just visit any camp ground....I have a number of people I call friends that I stay in touch with from all over the country that I have met at different camp grounds
