Hi all,

I am looking into a possible move to Canada.
I am a teacher in a UK secondary school, so would wish to continue the profession over in Canada. I understand all the VISA requirements etc etc, but I have a general query about salary.

I am currently paid just over £40000 per year before tax. Having spoken to one or two schools I realise that achieving this salary in Canada is unlikely, which is fair enough, but I was wondering if there are any teachers in Canada who could help me with the following ..

1) Are there any UK trained teachers teaching in Canada who find the cut in salary manageable?

2) What kind of taxes are imposed on the salary. What % is taken?

3) Are there any areas that are especially good to teach in?

Many thanks

I appreciate any advice.

Many thanks.

The tax deductible varies from province to province. Where are you looking to move to?

I'm not looking at anywhere specific at the moment. Depends entirely on the recommendations of others.

Forget Quebec unless you are fluent in French.
Taxes as a rule run about 35%

Teaching is a good profession in Canada (e.g. teachers earn a good salary compared to the cost of living), so you can't convert £40G to $CAD and necessarily expect to make the same OR to need the same in order to have the same level of lifestyle. Having lived in both countries, I can tell you that for MOST things, you get more way bang for your buck in Canada - so don't worry about that.

What subjects/grades do you teach? That may help us help you more effectively!
