I was SHOCKED to see the minimum wage for you Ontarians, $10.25!!! There are several US states with minimum wage less than half of that, how can Ontario afford to pay this insanely high amount to every worker?

Yes I know the American and Canadian dollar is not the same, but Canada's been catching up on us, and we're still down on our luck.

There's not much economic evidence that minimum wages significantly affect employment rates.

Higher prices and taxes for all goods and services? Higher labor costs mean everything is more expensive for consumers.

US and Canadian dollars are pretty much on par for a long period of time.

Healthy economy?

Latest release from the Labour Force Survey. Friday, July 9, 2010

Ontario added 60,000 jobs in June.

Here in Alberta minimum wage is $8.90 I think but its tough to find one paying under $15. An 18 year old kid who didnt graduate high school can easily get a job paying $80k+

All I can say is that high minimum wage is not necessarily a good or bad thing.

Canada has the highest minimum wage of America.

The Irish minimum wage is 1499 Euros.
The French one is also super high and fulltime there means 7 hours per day.

Canada established a fair minimum wage. It is on par with European Union minimum wages.

Not anymore. I have seen a lot of McJobs advertised for 10-12 dollars an hour.

The 80,000/year jobs for high school drop outs in haven't been easy to get in the last couple of years. They are out there, but the boom is long gone.
Plus that figure is probably a nothern rate with a lot of OT.

Yes those wages slumped in 09 but its back on now. Service companies (oil field) are hiring and have been since the start of spring getting ready for this year. Anything from rig moving, drilling, water trucks, tongs, fraccing, hotshot etc. Ft mac I'm sure has even higher wages. I'm not even considering the trades because you need more than a high school diploma or 4 years.

$10 to $12??? Maybe for pizza delivery and waitress but they also recieve tips.

Edit: sorry your right I probably exagerated with $15; McDicks and WalMart is probably paying that type of money

the minimum wage is at $10.25 cause the government would like majority of Canadians to be at middle class. so equality for everyone.

There isn't a single state in the union with a minimum wage "less than half of that" because the federal minimum wage is $7.25/hr. And while exchange rates currently have the two currencies very close to one another, typically the Canadian dollar is worth about 15-20% less. So if exchange rates return to recent trends, that would put Ontario's minimum wage at about $8 to $8.50/hr, which incidentally straddles the difference of Illinois' minimum wage of $8.25. So it's not that ridiculously high.
