Nobody said it was 40 below. Lots of Americans don't want to live in Upstate NY, Michigan or Wisconsin because they're too cold as well.
I love the cold, my wife hates it. My wife makes the choices.

Take a CLOSE look at the population density of Canada. Do most people imagine people living in the far nothern arctic due to their ignorance?

The largest urban area in Canada (GTA and Southern ontario) live more south geographically than about 10% of the American population.
The thing is that Canada is cold. Very cold. Yes, in the USA Detroit and Buffalo are cold too but people are fleeing those areas in droves for the south. Few people like cold weather.

What if.... (crazy idea, I know)... people used some sort of device to heat-up the inside of their homes?

Then, it wouldn't be cold.

I was mostly kidding. I live in Northern California at the moment.

But, you know, I've lived in some pretty cold places (like the mountains of Schwabia in Germany), and I stayed inside a lot more during the Winter time.

I mean... who's gonna sit around in a lawn chair on top of the snow, trying to suck a completely frozen cocktail through a straw clogged with ice?

Inside, it is nice and warm.

Like I said earlier in this thread, it gets pretty cold during the winter here. I didn't mind the cold when I was a kid. We use to love playing out in the snow, skating, sledding, bumper riding (anyone remember doing that? he he). Kids don't go outside now... they are stuck in front of the TV or computer.

Now that I am older I do stay indoors more during the colder winter days.... but now because I don't like the cold that much, and I can afford to travel, I spend 3-4 months down south. I am either in Phoenix or St. George, UT. There I can go outside and enjoy walks with my dog or a nice cold beer on the deck and send emails back home telling them how warm it is!!!

Default US vs Canada

I believe people from these countries are so similar that you wouldn't even feel you're in a different country when you visit either. They are both Democratic (at least when it comes to internal affairs)

I go with the US because of several reasons:

1) Jobs are definitely more in The US than Canada
2) Taxes are much less in the US than in Canada
3) US has much much wider range of climates, from very cold states such
as Alaska and Main to very warm states, such as Mississippi and Florida
to very Mild states such as California to very rainy states such as
Washington. Canada has definitely nice areas with good weather,
however it does not match the climate diversity of the US. and
generally Cold
4) Canada can be very very expensive! Buying a house in Vancouver
(which is a nice city BTW) can cost you as much as buying a house in
San Diego, California, which, needless to say, has a great climate with
mild temperatures close to the Beach to swim, 2 hours drive to ski, 2
hours drive to Desert! and it's a pretty safe city.
5) US is more Business Friendly

Canada does have some positive attributes, such as Health care. Canadians are very educated and know whole a lot about outside of their countries than we Americans! in fact that is true Even when it comes to the third world countries!
The immigration laws in Canada are much more inviting than the once in the US, most likely because of the resources that are available in Canada vs qualified workers that are available. you can migrate to Canada by investing , being a qualified worker, or for family reunion. you need to provide 150k in order to get an immigration visa vs 500k in the US. However, you will not receive the 150k back when applying for Canada!! in the US you will receive the 500k after 5 years. applying as a qualified worker for Canada is much easier than the US. it is virtually impossible! since there are so many qualified workers in the US. You need am invitation from the company that is willing to hire you Only! then they will provide you with a visa that is good for a few months and has to be renewed.

anyways I love both countries

In theory at least. The vast majority of our best players are with teams in the States, the Stanley Cup was last won by a Canadian team in 1993, and Sweden actually has more pro hockey teams than Canada does. (So does Finland.)

Technically all Major Junior teams are pro. As are the many minor pro cities.
