Good point, but on the other hand an overwhelming percentage of Hispanics who speak a second language speak English.

In Montreal - not necessarily.

Also, I would say that an overwhelming majority of hispanics in Latin America speak ONLY Spanish. For them, if they emigrate somewhere it doesn't really matter whether their new home is French-speaking or English-speaking.

It is common in Montreal and in Quebec in general to meet Latin Americans who speak only Spanish and French, and little or no English. I know quite a few personally.

There are 99,290 people of Latin American origin in the Toronto CMA according to the 2006 census (latest year for which these figures are available) which is more than any other city in Canada.

I love the concept of "visibility". It's the PC, passive-agressive way to say "swarhty". Being "Latin American" doesn't make you "visible", anyway. And shouldn't French Canadians be considered "Latin American".

Can't speak for others but for me a group being visible (or audible) is not a negative thing. As far as what I said about Latin Americans being fairly visible/audible in Quebec, it's a big positive for me because it allows me to (discreetly) seek them out - gives me a great opportunity to practise my Spanish, which I love speaking!

Hmm, that's a bit of a stretch. Consider that there is even some debate in certain circles about whether places like Haiti and even Brazil are part of Latin America. In most people's minds, I would say Latin Americans are people in the Americas who speak Spanish and maybe Portuguese.

Now, it is true that you often hear people in Quebec talk about the "tempérament latin" (latin temperament) of Québécois, but this is usually in reference to "latinity" as observed in Europe, and not really to Latin America.

That said, Québécois and Latin Americans generally do get along very well and there are many affinities, but I don't think this goes so far as to say they share any type of common socio-geographic space.

Going by wiki and the 2006 census, Latin Americans made up only 1% of the Canadian population and the area of largest population of people of Spanish ethnicity is in British Columbia.

For anyone who's interested here is the 2011 Canada census results which was published yesterday.

If you look at the demographics listed for visible minorities category in Demographics of Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia you'll see that there are both more and less Latin Americans than there are of several other immigrant groups - they kind of fall in the middle between Filipinos and Arabs.

Spanish ethnicity is not the same as Latin American ethnicity, I'd say.
