Sometimes you see the strangest things in the sky. Today I was up on Burnaby mountain (at Vancouver) taking pictures of the fog bank that was rolling in over the ocean from the north. The sun was sinking in the west and there was a big black cloud above coming in from the south about to cover the sun.

I spotted this bright colorful reflection in the sky that seemed to be hovering in place over the ocean and was able to get a picture of it. The picture was taken from quite a distance so it has been cropped at the sides so you can get a better look at what I could see. I don't know what it was (probably an incoming plane) but I thought this looked cool because it does look a bit like an eye in the sky.

Dougie, the pictures were taken around 4 p.m. on Sunday 02/05/12 (about an hour and a bit before sunset) from the top of Burnaby Mountain. The picture above was looking towards the Vancouver Airport to the southwest of where we were standing. I think the ball of light was probably a plane or helicopter approaching the airport and it was reflecting sunlight that was further distorted into an aura due to vapour or ice crystals in the air. This other picture below was taken shortly after from the same location on Burnaby Mountain (it has not been enlarged) only it is looking exactly due west over the city of Vancouver and across the Straight of Georgia with Vancouver Island in the far distance. The yellowish strip between the mainland and the island is the fogbank moving in from the north.
