Interesting how weak Jean was in a show down with Harper about suspending the Canadian parliament thus not putting Harper through a confidence of the house vote.

That would not happen with our GG, the PM would be told to sod off and check that he had the confidence of the house, if not the leader of the opposition would be invited to try his luck in forming a government.

Of course our GG is a little different, ex SAS etc
Biography of Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae | The Governor-General of New Zealand Te Kawana Tianara o Aotearoa

What is surprising is the amount of Canadian conservatives who were ranting the GG had no power at all at any time over Harper.
Has the GGs reserve powers been dropped if the Conservatives are in power ?

Interesting, Alberta suggesting they would leave Canada if the Liberals took power, do the people of Alberta have more in common with Americans than other Canadians ?
Another American state ?

First, I think it needs to be understood that prorogation to avoid scandal isn't expressly forbidden, nor is it without precedent. Jean's decision was based off of consultations with constitutional scholars, most of whom suggested that a prorogation was legal in that case. In short, regardless of her own or popular opinions, she can't circumvent legal opinion.

In short, what Harper did was underhanded and devious, but not unconstitutional. But, basing a constitutional decision off the motives of the Prime Minister is not really acceptable, as the GG has to remain impartial in her decision making.

If you really want to understand Alberta, you have to understand the concept of Western Alienation. Given that parties are largely split along regional lines in character and outlook, Alberta fears that they'll again become a marginalized backwater of Canadian politics, as the Liberals are perceived to be the most Eastern federalist party in the country.

Interesting, down here we would believe an impartial decision to be let the cards fall as they will in the house and if a government fails a confidence vote so be it.
When did Canada move to a rule that the GG has to take legal opinion ? are the reserve powers the GGs or are they left to lawyers etc ?

Is the oil in Alberta on Crown land ? or does it belong to the provincial government ?

Harper still faced the confidence vote, and in the end it made a lot more sense to suspend parliament till everything got sorted out.

When parliament was prorogued we had one Official Opposition Leader and when it reconvened we had another, based on that alone I think it was a good idea to go ahead with the prorogation.

When exactly did anyone credible or large numbers of Albertans say they would leave Canada if the Liberals took power?

The Canadian Liberals were in power for the majority of the 20th century, and probably for close to 35 of the last 50 years, and as recently as 2006 in fact.

One of the leadership candidates for the Wildrose Alliance had said the province should consider referendums on separating if the Liberals came to power, but those were just his views and he was defeated.

The cards couldn't be let to fall as they would because the Prime Minister had requested a prorogation.

Since there was no legal reason to deny his request, any denial would have been based on her own opinions.

The GG has reserve powers, but that hardly makes her a dictatorial figurehead, able to sweep aside a Prime Minister's request.

She's still bound within the constitution and legal convention (for example, she could, legally appoint me Prime Minister right now. That would, however, go against convention, and unfortunately for the country, won't happen)

In the south, most is on privately owned land, though most resources are crown owned. In the north, both are generally crown owned.

Virtually all crown land in the provinces is provincially administered, so your second question is irrelevant.

The Govenor General had all the power to not accept Harper's request, and had advisors telling her that she should deny it.

Still not very serious compared to, well... some other places.
