As I understand it, Australians, Britons, Kiwis, etc. just think of us as ~Americans anyway...so is there really a point of us remaining in the Commonwealth?
Isnt our status in the commonwealth purely a symbolic gesture from a bygone era? Probably cost a fair bit of money to make the change,i think things are fine as they are..

It might keep us from trying to annex you and impose our ''English'' system of measurements and the American way we spell (e.g. "center'' instead of ''centre'').

If you left the Commonwealth, HRM QEII would not be your head of state anymore, and you'd have to give up the GG and LG positions in favor of a President and likely Governors.
If Charles can't be skipped in the line of succession, I'd highly suggest leaving the Commonwealth temporarily until William and Kate can ascend.

Having the Queen as the HOS is no longer a requirement for Commonwealth membership.
The GG and LG positions could also stay virtually unchanged, if we wanted it that way, but you'll never hear this option because too many Canadians are just not educated on the subject.

How exactly do you understand that? Living in the UK I have met many Aussis and tons of Britons - (no Kiwis yet!) None of them seemed confused.

I'm afraid I don't understand your question.
Well, I'm not sure what I mean either. I was helping my sister with a Canadian History project/debate thing and they just mentioned that Britain used Canada (and probably other commonwealth countries) as Canon Fodder in both World Wars - so it's not like those ~historical ties are all that pleasant to start with. Then I did some web searching of my own, found this place, read some older posts and found that the majority of posters here barely even considered Canada a Commonwealth country. Which made me wonder - why exactly do we remain one?
There are 54 countries that are members of the Commonwealth of Nations and a short queue of other countries lined up wanting to become members and waiting for acceptance.
If anyone has to ask if Canada should or should not remain a member of the Commonwealth of Nations then it means they most likely don't know or understand what the C of N represents, what it is and what its goals and objectives are and how it may or may not benefit each of its member nations and their interactions with each other.
I think before continuing further discussion it's best to first learn everything you can about the Commonwealth of Nations as a "whole entity" and then determine for yourself whether or not you think Canada should remain a member.
Personally I'm all for the organization and its objectives and I would hate to see Canada drop out as a member.
