What is the likelihood of an international teacher (Australian) gaining a teaching position in British Columbia, Alberta or Ontario?

My husband has 12 years teaching experience in Art and Design (Fine Art) and Design and Technology (Industrial Arts, Metal Work, Wood Work and Graphic Design and Technical Graphics).

His Bachelor of Secondary Education and Masters Degree in Education, are both from Australian Universities.

We have scored high with regards to visa points to immigrate to Canada and have been advised by the Ministry of Education to start the teacher certification process for each province first.

The entire process would be costly. The application to become a certified teacher is around $300.00 for each province.

What are the teaching prospects like for out of state teachers and would we be standing behind the many other hopeful teachers?

Would we be wasting our time and money in doing so?

Should we be concentrating our efforts on just one province?

Any advise is greatly appreciated!

From what I understand (my neice just graduated), times are tough for teachers, lots of people taking substitute jobs waiting to break in. But having said that, your husband's experience and specialization may make a difference? Perhaps someone else will know who to contact for more clear information.

That's a tricky one I would think. The competition for teaching jobs in this country is positively harrowing, they get paid very well here and get good benefits, as teaching is considered a high value profession. Canadian-educated prospects will ALWAYS get first consideration.

BUT...

I am not expert on job trends but I would say his chances are better than most, given the specialized nature of his chosen field.

Maybe contact some art colleges directly and see what happens? OCAD? Art INst, of Vancouver? etc...

Found these links which may be of assistance, the second one shows labour trends for artisans and it looks good:

Creative Designers And Craftspersons / Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS)

I think rather than picking a location and then trying to find a position, it might work better to find the position(s) first and then decide out of those options which location suits you.

Also if he has a Master's he can be a lecturer in a university - for which no teacher qualification is needed. Are you not looking at the east coast at all? Mount Allison university in Sackville, NB Mount Allison University :: Sackville, New Brunswick Canada the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia NSCAD University both have renowned programs.

I just wanted to thank everyone for your comments. It has really helped and given us more to consider.
We have started to contact school districts and have received positive feedback due to my husbands specialist areas of teaching. Thanks again, it is most appreciated!
