Indeed. In most places, protection goes by the name "official language status"!

Malarky why would a country need an official language.

You wanna actually add to this conversation find some places that don't have an official language or significant ethnic issues. I really have an interest in this type of thing, it's pretty consistent in most places in the world, and those that do not seem to have a major issues. Seriously I have an interest in language and if you can show freak examples I'd be more than interested.

Oh sorry; I must have misread. I distinctly thought you had used the word Malarky, posed a rhetorical question and garnished those with your little head smack emoticon your post. Why goodness me, yes there it all is in your quoted remark above.

If you want serious input then I'd suggest you either gash-can the sarcasm or stifle yourself when you get a response in kind! Okie-dokie?

You can't be serious with this.

You got a country of 350 million right below you with no official language but perhaps one of worst kinds of ethnic issues of illegal immigration from it's neighbour to the south and the imposition of the spanish language growing daily.

That wasn't directed at you nor was I expected you to respond to such comment, that was directed at someone else.

I meant the question that was directed at you, if you have some examples I'd like to here it.

I've danced with you once before, Acajack. While you are generally a nice enough chap, you seem to believe enough of the revisionist spin that Quebec nationalists put on language, culture, and history that I know we are incapable of having any kind of sensible discussion on this topic. For you, it's too emotive.

I'm very happy that my people threw away their largely useless tongue to learn the language that is now the one used by movers and shakers around the world. This kind of cold calculus may not rest well with you, and that's perfectly fine, but don't for a moment think that people like me won't comment on the lunacy that is official French language policy dictated by the Government of Quebec.

And you won't likely convince me that that any language is inherently useless. Rather, they are rendered useless, often deliberately.

No, I won't, but that's a point on which we're going to have to disagree. As a functionalist, I view language as little more than a tool and I value it for its utility more than anything else. I don't much care about the more touchy-feely aspects of language.

At the end of the day, if we're all speaking Mandarin, then so be it. English is the current global lingua franca. Who knows what language will hold that place 50 or 100 years from now?
