Do you sometimes get icy stares when you tell people you really don't like hockey? In Canada if you don't really care about hockey you are gazed upon as a) something wrong with you or, b) unpatriotic. I don't care. I like baseball. Anybody feel this way?

Probably comes down to the context in which you are talking about hockey but In my substantial time here in Canada i've never heard of people being chastised or vilified for generally not liking hockey or being a fan,I'd say the majority if not all Canadians understand that hockey isnt for every one, although you might get a more heated response if you actually start trashing the sport .

I'd agree with this. Lots of people are indifferent to hockey in Canada, both native-born and newcomers.

It's not a big deal, but of course if you bash on it and say "hockey sucks" then yeah some people may react. It's no different from bashing on the national sport anywhere else in the world.

I think it depends where you are in the country, your gender, and maybe even your age. Growing up around Oshawa boys were expected idolize hockey stars and it was rare to know a guy who didn't play at least house league hockey at some point during their childhood. Hockey and nationalism where definitely linked, sometimes in ugly ways. Girls got a pass on liking hockey, or liking sports altogether.

As an adult in Toronto I find the diversity (and the dismal Maple Leaf franchise) takes the spotlight off hockey here. It's popular but so is european football and cricket and no one seems to care what you prefer as long as you don't start bashing a sport.

yeah it's kinda annoying, I'm a large guy, spent most of childhood being told I shouldn't been a hockey player. I think the sport is cool in general, but the elitism and money that goes into it is a major turn off at least as a kid. Nowadays I'd love to learn to play, but it's a joke for an adult to wanna learn to play where I live.
