By that I mean the Southern United States where I live, where I was born and raised. In other words, the most un-Canadian part of the U.S. (excluding the little Canadas in south Florida).

I go to Deerfield Beach (Ft. Lauderdale) once a year in December. But, S. Florida isn't part of what I'd call the cultural south so it doesn't really count per se. We used to drive and while we've never been to Mississippi, we've driven through N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Georgia into Florida. We visited Savannah and a few other towns in Georgia along I-95. Everybody was pretty hospitable.
Other than a short trip to Williamsburg, VA (while living in the US), I haven't been to the "deep south" since I was a kid. Like willg said, Florida doesn't seem to fit into that category to me, we have been there quite a few times. I know quite a few Canadians who love Savannah Georgia.
Yes, I've been down south and I despised it. Most of the people I met were ignorant, prejudiced and very old fashioned in their thinking. Outside of the larger cities and the college towns, the south is the armpit of the U.S.A.

... I think that was kind of unnecessarily inflammatory language for talking about someone's home.
But along those lines, and we all know that's the stereotype we hear of from the Northerners, do some of the other posters who've been there have anything to comment on that particular characterization and whether or not what he sees one way might be interpreted differently? I've always kind of hoped it was an unfair stereotype cuz like I've said, it seems like an interesting and different culture I hoped it wasn't really true.
