Is that date considered Canada's December 7 - not because of an attack, of course, but a date when war came to Canada nonetheless?

Not really. It's not viewed in that way. There isn't a "Canada's version of this" and "Canada's version of that" for everything.

For most people who pay attention to such things, the most significant historical event of WW1 for Canada was the Battle of Vimy Ridge:

It was a guess really! The major events for Canada in World War One were Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and the Halifax Explosion, and as the first two were drawn out affairs and not super unique (as in history is full of battles), I picked the unusual one.

As for its significance to Canada, I don't think it's looked at as "the war coming home". It's viewed more as a devastating industrial accident, I suppose because no one really meant for it to happen and it was quite avoidable. Certainly, however, it was a terrible tragedy! In its wake, Canada's Atlantic Metropolis was reduced to this, with thousands were dead and countless injured:

Halifax explosion was a real tragedy. I learned about it after watching a Canadian commerical on an American station
