I grew up in Canada. The summer break is shorter, but our Christmas and Spring breaks were much longer than the US, so I think time off throughout the year works out to a similar amount.

Some quick Googling shows that the Canadian school year seems to be about 194 to 198 days, compared to about 180 in the US. A ten month year for Canada vs a nine month year for the US. Thats pretty impressive for Canada. Thats a lot more class room time.

Here in Quebec my kids finish school this Friday and start up again on August 28. That's about 9.5 weeks of summer holidays.

They also get a good two weeks off at Christmas and one week in March.

Our local school board in Texas has summer holidays from June 8 to Aug 26.
The Toronto District School Board summer holiday is from June 27 to Sept 3rd.

Kids in NY/NJ and other 4 season climate places get out end of June and back the day after Labor Day. In warmer states like Florida, kids get out of school in late May/early June and back middle of August. It depends on region.

All kids also get off between Christmas Eve until day after New Years (23 Dec - Jan 2), and a week off around Easter week, and a week off in February + 2 days for Thanksgiving weekend.

180 school days in America...

Very roughly, usually something like from 8 am to 3:30 pm. With two 15-minute recesses and an hour for lunch.
