Default Moving to Canada

Hi Guys,

As the title suggests, I'm thinking about moving to Canada in 2/3 years. I've just got afew questions, if you'd be so kind as to help me.

Im 21, male, English and currently training to be an accountant, so fingers crossed i'll be fully qualified by the time I move. I'd only be moving temporarily (2 years max), so I couldnt care less what job I did, but obviously I'd prefer the accountancy sector.

Firstly, where to move??? I have afew distant relatives in Toronto, and went there when I was very young, so I have abit of an affinity to the place. Anywhere else is completely alien to me. I'm looking for a place where living costs are fairly cheap, jobs are a plenty, somewhere with a good nightlife/social scene, good public transport, (maybe an international airport if I have to make a swift getaway haha), I have no kids, will be completely on my own, I dont intend to drive while there.

Secondly, what are the feeling towards English people? I wouldnt want to go there and be some sort of social outcast, or get kicked in for my accent!! lol. Do any cities have British Communities?

Thanks in advance,

Sam

I'd suggest you skim through some of these posts, and in fact, perhaps even post your questions here as well:

Canada : British Expat Discussion Forum

I should add, most Canadians have no problems with English people. You won't be considered a social outcast... any more than a Canadian in Britain would. And no, there are no British communities in any Canadian city. Victoria, BC doesn't count.

If you're looking for 'cheap', you're not going to find it in Toronto - very expensive.

If you're looking for jobs aplenty, take a look at some of Ontario's cities that are experiencing economic booms - Barrie (north of Toronto), Kitchener/Waterloo (north-west of Hamilton), London & Woodstock (north of Detroit/Windsor).

Default Montreal

If you are looking for cheap, I would recommend Montreal. Compared to many of the other capitals, Montreal's cost of living is relatively cheap. Montreal is very diversed and you sure would not feel like an outcast and depending as what part of Montreal you live in, you might also be able to learn french. If you were to attend McGill for example they have British Clubs and they would certainly welcome new members. Depending as to what you are planning on doing while in Canada, Montreal might be IT for you.

Hey Sam, There are no 'british' communities in Canada other than ersatz pubs where ex-pats gather to watch footie or rugby with like minded people. People with English accents are treated fairly in Canada and some women find the accent attractive. Bear in mind, that most 'canadians' can't tell the difference between a scouse, geordie, scottish, estuary english accent...they all sound 'english' to them.
