In this brilliant article, statistician Nate Silver uses mathematics to provide an understanding of the lack of Canadian teams winning the Stanley Cup. For those who don't know him, Nate Silver is quite a popular American statistician who recently blew away conventional polls after accurately predicting the Obama-Romney elections with his superior statistical methodology. Highlights of his article:
Just how unlikely has Canada’s Stanley Cup drought been? And is there anything in the league’s economics that might help to explain it?
bad luck is a major component
N.H.L.’s economic structure changed at an unfavorable time for Canada (low CAD$ earlier and now the salary cap when teams are actually profitable)
a shortage of N.H.L. teams in Canada relative to the demand for hockey there and the revenues that Canada contributes to the league
Canadian teams routinely sell out their arenas at high ticket prices — whether or not they are any good. This may reduce their incentive to compete.
American teams now outnumber us by over 4 to one, and consequently some of our best Canadian players are playing for American teams. It hasn't been that long since a Canadian team has won the Cup. Let's not kid ourselves, the Habs have won the Stanley Cup more times than any other NHL team.
Roberto Luongo must be one of his key conspirators...
No Cory Schneider is the representative to the NHLPA..
If you are Canadian everything that sucks about hockey is always Bettemens fault.... Which is why we (Canadian Fans) boo him every time he shows his face at a Canadian Arena or Event
OP's link certainly hits nail on head concerning the matter. I think getting rid of Bettman and along with it his salary cap and a half dozen or so money losing teams would be a step in the right direction.

I agree.
Gary Bettman
Get rid of him and the league will be much better.
Then we can finally get another southern Ontario team.
Hamilton would be a fantastic NHL location.
