Seems to me if you get in a fight down there (USA)you can kill your opponent with no legal accountability.

Agreed but does it really need to be lethal force just because you got your nose bloodied in a fight?

Well, I'm sure we don't know all the details yet, but a person can be killed in a fight by having their head slammed into the ground, so yes, I think it is justified to shoot/kill someone in such a circumstance.

We have no proof that the young boy would have continued to beat up Zimmerman until he was dead just because he saw this guy following him or just going in the same direction.
Also it was stated in the trial that Zimmerman had extensive martial arts training, obviously MRZ chose to shoot the kid instead of fighting back..
Obviously we can speculate forever but it seems odd to me that a street wise Florida kid like Treyvon wouldnt have thought the potential for this guy to have a gun was a real possibility and just maybe Treyvon saw this guy with a gun coming after him and it was in fact Treyvon fighting for his life after getting the impression Zimmerman was going to shoot him...

Correct, but it isn't a verdict about whether or not Zimmerman killed him - he did kill him. The issue is about proving beyond a reasonable doubt (not "very likely", but reasonable doubt by criminal standards), that he met the requirements for murder or manslaughter - and that the "threat" was not reasonable. I guess they decided he had reason to fear being killed and therefore did not meet the requirements for manslaughter.

Martial arts training doesn't necessarily mean you have a leg up in a fight though and you'll always win.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying any of this was okay. But there is a difference between a moral wrong and meeting proof for a criminal conviction. It's not a "he very likely did it", it's beyond a reasonable doubt. A lot of people struggle with that, but it is what it is. There was reasonable doubt that he feared for his life, according to the jury, so he cannot be convicted.

I see. So if I come over and repeatedly smack you in the head with a lead pipe, you should have no legal right to shoot me in self-defense because there is no proof I would have continued to hit you until you were dead?

I am also a Canadian and while I feel Zimmerman's actions leading up to the shooting could have been handled better, shooting someone who is attempting to split your head open while smashing it against the sidewalk is completely justifiable. Sadly, if the victim had of been white, this would never have made the news outside of Florida.

Exactly. Some people watch far too much UFC for their own good.

.
Much is made of this head slamming incident, i saw the pics of the back of Zimmermans head, seemed to be very minor , how many slams are we talking about? As for your analogy if i was stalking you with a gun you'd be well within your rights to pick up a lead pipe and try to defend yourself then i'd shoot you and claim self defense.
