In my opinion, you have a tendency to make massive generalizations on behalf of Canadians when in it's in fact just your opinion. Replace "Canadians" with "I" and it'll be more accurate.
Back to the original question, I would imagine that the Canadians who know enough about Michigan to make an educated opinion about the entire state are likely people who live close to the Michigan border. It has nothing to do with how long a person has been living in Canada. Here in BC, Michigan really doesn't factor in daily life seeing how it's a state thousands of miles away. I personally know little about the state other than where it is and that it's a great lake state and is probably not unsimilar to Ontario. Ask me about Washington, Oregon, or California, and that's another matter. I imagine that I'm not alone.

Yes you should take Detroit, it's Michigan most populated city. I know Detroit seems to be a town reck to some people... but from what I see and hear the city is being brought out. Its becoming more safe ( As I hear ), also some of the USA top schools is in the metro area of Detroit. ( Well I know at least one school, and its like in with the top 10... one time it was number one.)

The only good high school in Detroit is probably Cass Tech.

Because the USA purchased Alaska from Russia. Canada did not.

Sure Michigan - jump right in! I get along great with people from Michigan. The more the merrier! You're practically Canadian anyway.

I've lived in Michigan for years and now live in Canada. Here's my take on it. The only parts of Canada that are remotely similar to Michigan in regards to lifestyles, economy, outlook, cultural, etc. is Southwestern Ontario. Specifically Windsor, Essex County, Kent County, Sarnia and Lambton County. Those parts of Ontario I am convinced would be better of joining Michigan and the US or even just forming their own province. As for Michigan joining Canada, Canada probably wouldn't want it in its current state.
