Perhaps if you give us some examples of other great independently owned coffee shops we could give them a try and see just what we are missing.

You're in Montreal right Jambo? Places like Tunnel Espresso Bar, Cafe Myriade and Cafe Arts are fantastic, give them a try. In Toronto I love places like Good Neighbour, Crema Cafe and Jet Fuel.

I started really appreciating coffee in my teens and at home it would always be 100% Blue Mountain Jamaican coffee made in the percolator each morning, so the watered down stuff they serve at Tim's was never something I enjoyed.

These places while i dont doubt have great coffee are on the other side of the city and really dont lend themselves to convenience of location or convenience if you want more than just a coffee, i do stop by the Arts Cafe when i'm visiting a friend in the area as they do more than just coffee they do a pretty healthy lunch. Do you have any suggestions for Montreals West Island preferably in the Lasalle area?

Personally I have no idea how shopping is in most states or provinces, but my experience comparing good grocery stores in the places I have lived are about the same selection is present in them for the most part. There may be a couple differences here and there but not the extremes you have experienced.

All I can gather from this is that I am glad I don't live in Oregon as the grocery stores sounds absolutely terrible
True that my experience is mainly is in the west, Washington, Oregon, California,Arizona, Nevada and Idaho, and stores do vary a bit depending if they are in a smaller town or not, but overall I stand by what I've stated. My emphasis is on imported items in these stores.
As for Oregon, they do have a good speciality store, four locations, called Zupan's. It's expensive even by Canadian standards, but it is where people have to go if they are looking for some of the items I've mentioned.

Timmy's coffee has a certain following I know, but to me it's middle of the road to please the masses.

While the little cafes do good coffee the amount of Tim Hortons tells me they must be doing something right as i have no less that 5 locations within a mile of my house and during the day they are all packed, i dont mind their products and stop in on occasion but my normal go to coffee shop is the convenience store where i but my gas..

It used to be fine. I always have to laugh now at their slogan, "Always Fresh".
LOL. Always fresh, my foot. Parbaked pastries and coffee that can sit around for a long time when the outlet isn't busy doesn't qualify as fresh to me.

Tim Hortons is average. Average coffee, average donuts, average meals. Great if you're on the go, but I don't know anybody who makes a special trip to Tim's for lunch.

Why? Tim's locations are always too busy. The drive-thru is 20 cars deep, the lineup inside is seven people deep, and the person at the head of the line wants that sandwich--no, not that one, the other one, and can you put that on a herb parmesan roll? You can't? Subway can. Oh, of course, you're not Subway. Well, okay, but do you have hot peppers? No? Subw--ah, yes, okay. To drink? A Coke--no wait, make that a Sprite--and for the kids, we'll have--kids? Kids? What do you want? Ashley? Madison? Kyle? You can read, see the menu board. Oh, you can too. Look: S-A-N-D-W-I-C-H. What kind do you want? Kyle, stop bothering the man. No, they don't have toys here. Kyle! Leave the man alone! No, we're not going to McDonald's. Kyle! You've made the man leave! No, you can't have a box of Timbits for lunch.....

No, thanks. (And if it's not apparent, I'm the guy that Kyle was threatening with his toy lightsaber. I got fed up with the slowness of Tim's and what I had to put up with while waiting in line. I left, and went elsewhere for my coffee.)

Given that Tim's is average, and so are many other places, if all I want is coffee, I'll go to the other places. They are less crowded, the coffee is just as good, and the service is faster. I'm in and out, badda-bing, badda-boom, in two or three minutes.

I've often felt that Tim Hortons ought to have a "coffee and donut only" express lane, for those of us who want nothing else. "A large double-double and a dozen Timbits, thanks very much." And you're out of there in two minutes instead of fifteen.

Their marketing department would be pleased to know that i dont frequent Timmies that much because they are usually too crowded, while many of us dont see the hype many more will line up out the door or around the block for their drive through.Obviously they are doing something right
Once in a while when our sportscar club meets there i'll have a ham and cheese Panini,a bowl of French onion soup and a large coffee,, a satisfying meal if you can find some where to sit..

McDonalds are located in basically every city on the planet, does the fact that they are everywhere and always seem to stay in business mean that the quality is high? It's the same with Tim's. People will line up and go there because it is convinient and people in general like safe choices they grew up with for the most part. Personally as I stated before I find their coffee and food terrible, but that is only my opinion.

To answer your question before about independent places near where you live, I unfortunately don't spend anytime on that side of town when I am in Montreal, so hopefully one of the full time residents can help with that. In a city with such a fiercely local and incredible food scene like Montreal, I would be shocked if there wasn't a better option to Tim's.
