Actually it isn't in the middle, but that doesn't matter.
If Quebec becomes a separate country that isn't going to stop the maritime provinces from being provinces of Canada. They will still be Canada.
Just like Alaska and Hawaii are states of U.S.A. and like Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are territories of U.S.A. Like Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark and like Saint Pierre and Miquelon (islands just immediately south of Newfoundland) is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France. Each is "connected" to its respective country even if separated by water or land.
I doubt Quebec will ever actually separate. If Quebec separates and becomes a sovereign country it wouldn't be able to support itself. It would be an economic disaster for Quebec and there would be a mass exodus of people leaving Quebec. If Quebec becomes a sovereign country and tried to stop or interfere with trade, commerce, free passage of people and goods between the rest of Canada and USA and other countries that too would be a disaster for Quebec. Other ways would be found for trade and transportation. Everyone else would impose sanctions on Quebec, refuse to do business and trade with Quebec and starve the country out. Quebec would become like another Cuba and would turn into a 3rd world country.
Or else U.S.A. would bide its time for a while and then go to war and occupy or annex Quebec and claim it for its own territory. ... or maybe sell the land back to Canada. And anyone who thinks U.S.A. wouldn't do things like that better give their head a good smack and think about it again.
These people in Quebec who are agitating about separating and becoming a sovereign country are too complacent and they're not very smart, they aren't thinking ahead to what kinds of serious problems they could be faced with if they separate from Canada.

Actually, I think QC would do okay on it's own. Once you get outside Montreal, you see that QC tends to operate very independently. When I lived in small town BC, companies still ruled. Here, you get so much independent workers. Hard to describe. I'd say live in QC for quite some time before writing it off as being unable to be separate. It really does not feel like you live in Canada.
That being said, I would be on the first plane out.

It's funny you should post something as inane as this and then say that Quebec separatists are not very smart.

Its a bit more complex as Quebec would need much in the way of infrastructure to support whatever industry or agriculture it would try to live on, most mechanical machines and their parts are made outside of Quebec including tractors, trucks and heavy machinery, and whatever they did make would need customers, Also all the things that the Federal government takes care of now would have to be born solely by Quebec including a viable monetary system and social infrastructure. Then theres the mass exodus that would take place in not only people but jobs.
In the big picture Quebec needs the rest of North America a whole lot more than North America needs Quebec.
The ones that will really benefit from a Quebec separation will be the lawyers who will be tied up for decades deciding the legal aspects of what exactly Quebec is entitled to leave with.
I personally cant see any benefit for Quebec to separate from Canada particularly in todays situation where Quebec is basically having its cake and eating it to.
IMO Quebec separation is about a stupid a move as can be imagined.
That said i'll wish Quebec all the best if it ever does separate, like Aliss,i'll be outta here as well.

I am against Quebec independence as you know and I do agree it would be disruptive to some degree but on the other hand the vast majority of people seriously underestimate how ''business as usual'' things would still be post-independence.
Israel still trades with Palestine. Armenia trades with Turkey and Azerbaijan. Money talks. BS walks.

No doubt It probably would be business as usual, as long as Quebec wants to play ball so to speak, if in their independence they alienate themselves from their neighbors by enacting bizarre trade sanctions on their business neighbors eg; not letting free flow of commerce from Canada west to the Maritimes take place, they'll find themselves all alone very quickly.

Stopping or merely hindering trade between the ROC would be suicidal and could turn nasty real quick, I cant believe they would go that route.
As for that place sinking to 3rd world status...
Sure they would see their living standard go down a notch or two, some flight of capital and a brain drain. But not an exodus of the magnitude some foresee, no gloom and doom.
No matter what they do it is still a weird place with totally out of whack politics where half the population has been brainwashed into thinking they are under siege.

Are you thinking about the Spanish-American war? What makes you think the United States wants Quebec?
