For some winter is a rather exciting time of year and they look forward to getting out and enjoying what winter has to offer..For those that dont do anything but sit around and complain about the cold i can see where it wouldnt be their favorite time of the year, for those i'd suggest looking into immigrating to the supposed paradise that is Florida. Another silly attempt to rank cities based on questionable weightings of subjective criteria. To think that I've sat in on guest lectures of Martin in undergrad and he ends up putting his name behind this. People may go to school and live life peacefully but seriously...Ottawa and Calgary both score A+ in Boring more than anything else. I'd take Florida if I can have Miami over these places in a heartbeat. If I have to live somewhere cold, it better be damn good.

yea every time talking about frigid winter, one has to bring up winter sports, as if it is some sort of daily activity that makes the colder weather so much more bearable and enjoyable. I highly doubt an average Canadian can get to ski every two weeks during the winter, most I know probably once or twice each winter if at all.
Yeah, it is -30c but don't worry, you can ski! sure. what about the rest of the 99.5% of the winter you don't ski and have to live normal life? People in Los Angeles can ski too and it doesn't have to be -30C.
The fact that Ottawa and Calgary make the top 10 global cities already makes such ranking almost meaningless or even laughable, at least appear with very quesionable standard. Most people living on this planet won't find these two cities attractive (they each have like 1M people?). Even in the absence of the long and unbearable winter, those two cities are hardly top cities on this continent by ANY standard, not to say in the world.
Half of the top 5 cities in the US-Canada area, seriously? Plus, how "creative" is Ottawa and Calgary, what creative stuff that has ever been produced and exported out of these two nondescript cities? The only thing I give to Ottawa is that it is so incredible dull and sprawling that it truely represents Canada as the capital city.
Well if the ranking was on weather, no city in Canada would make the list. Quality of life is based on a lot more than weather & population.
You don't have to be bitter that the city you live didn't make the list. Its just a list.
I am not bitter. I will laugh if Toronto is on the top 10 list as well. I along with others just think Ottawa and Calgary won't make the top 10 of anything, maybe except cities with atrocious winters.
my comments regarding weather pertains to jambo1's comments about winter sports and has nothing to do with the ranking. I am sick of hearing "winter sports" every time people talk about cold weather. Winter sports don't make our Canadian winter any less annoying. Vew few Canadian really ski that regularly in reality.

Just pointing out that theres more to do in winter than jusat sit on your butt and complain about the cold.
As for Calgary and Ottawa being the best places to live, i'd also have to vigorously disagree,Digby NS and Nanaimo BC would be preferable IMO
