The U.S. had control of Washington and North Dakota in the 1850's/1860's. They could have went further north to capture British Columbia and Alberta before they joined Canada in the 1870's.

Because the Jay Treaty (1794) set the border at the 49th parallel. And the USA sometimes really does take treaties seriously, when they involve Christian Capitalists, including the British.

In 1844, Democrats lobbied President Polk to move the treaty line to 54-40 (the southern tip of what was then Russian Alaska), but Polk, unwilling to fight simultaneous wars on both borders, resisted.

The Canadians actually did something smart for a change.

Putting an army would in the West would have been seen as too provocative at the time so instead of having an army to define the borders and the fact that the area is clearly within Canadian control they created a police force..................The North West Mountain Police soon to become the RCMP.

It reinforced the boundaries without an army and this is why it was created in the first place and why the RCMP was created in Regina and not from Montreal or Toronto.

Oh my; take heart our friend, one day sanity will return and reign supreme. Our respective countries are going through a period of trying to adapt to understanding things aren't always as rosy as we've been led to believe.

Some of us are having a problem coming to terms with the frailty of our position as either fragile empires or lofty morality snobs. It'll all settle down once we've had a period of getting used to the fact that the north ameircan continent is not the center of the univers no matter how we've been led to believe otherwise.

Would that we could abandon historical role playing and at least sit at a common table and come to terms as to how we could both benefit from combined strengths. As an example; both countries working with a dovetailed improved universal type of healthcare system working to control costs of provisions would be something to behold in terms of drug and procedure costs reductions.
