Most minimum wage jobs have some tips involve. Australian don't have a tipping culture. So that person working in a server job in BC ma be getting 11 something per hour, but could take home much more in tips.
When I worked a minimum wage job as a busboy, my cut of the tips for the night was double my wage. When I worked as a waiter, even more.
So I'll take a minimum wage job with tips, over 18 dollars an hour any day.
Actually restaurants are places where we do tend to tip. Not to the level of North America. Nowhere else in the world tips to that level as far as I am aware.
I suspect the high minimum wage is a hangover from the days when the workforce was highly unionised. Plus no one I know wants to see the level of inequality that is common in many countries.

Don't misunderstand me. From a societal point of view, I am for a higher minimum wage. From a workers point of view, it depends on the job. I know waiters that can make up to 300 dollars in tips in one evening.
