Logically an independent Quebec would align itself with the US, like Canada already does.

I agree. Only someone completely uninformed would think we want to align with Putin. Why? What is the gain for that?

I also think it'd be great to be part of such a large internal market.
The EU is a crumbling bridge, I wouldn't want to get on it. It makes a million times more sense to have a union with the US or the anglosphere.

Doesn't Greenland have some sort of quasi-association (not formal member) with the EU? Even though Greenland is thousands of miles away from European mainland. Same thing for Iceland. Not strictly in Europe's vicinity either.

Indeed. I think that if ever there came to be serious consideration of EU membership for Canada, the fact that we're not in Europe wouldn't be a major problem. Stuff like defence and foreign policy (in light of our proximity to the US) would be much more important.

Not to mention that Canada (and Quebec should it become independent) have well-functioning and robust democratic system, robust rule of law, along with a relatively strong economy. All those factors already align Canada with the EU criteria for membership, probably more qualified than say Turkey.

I am under the impression that most of the EU does not meet this criteria. UK, Germany, Scandinavia and Netherlands, maybe France too fit this. I don't call a place like Portugal or even Italy not to say eastern Europe fits this.
