How was it that the French were able to keep these islands that are within sight of Newfoundland instead of turning them over to the British to become part of Canada?

It was part of the negotiations related to all those wars that were fought between France and Britain back in the day. You know how it goes with treaties: I give this, you give this, I keep this, you keep this.

The usual logic we hear is that there was a lot of flip-flopping of colonies back and forth between the two powers. France wanted to keep SPM in order to retain at least a small foothold in northern North America, in the hopes of using it as springboard for eventually winning some larger territories back.

It was kept as a fishing base from which France could have acess to the then relatively lucrative Newfoundland fisheries. It was a tidbit thrown to France in order to balance losing the rest of New France.

Is the accent of the locals different than that spoken by French Canadians?

Very much so. They have some of their own traits but to the untrained ear it sounds remarkably close to the mainstream accents in northern and central France.

I had been wondering about this recently actually. Seems like a cool place that nobody really knows about...I'd love to visit!

When I heard people from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon speak, I thought their accent sounded like a mix of French (from France) and Acadian accents.

To my ear, all French-speakers have the same accent.

Not at all! The Quebecois accents are more high-pitched and nasal than the French from France accents.

The Newfies needed a place that they could smuggle good untaxed rum from, without sailing all the way to the Bahamas.
