I started a thread several months ago about Lexus RX350 being built in Cambridge, Ont. yet they cost so much more money in Canada than in the States, that thousands of Southern Ontarians cross the border to buy them in Buffalo and Detroit. This is so stupid and short sighted, as that is hundreds of thousands of dollars of lost revenue, all because of high taxes that go to Big Government. I watch shows on HGTV and little dumpy homes all over Ontario built in the 80's are $500k or more, where in almost all of the USA, they would be $300k MAX. Why do Canadians embrace a Huge Government Industrial Complex? Is it because, it's all they know?

Not everything to do with government. Canadians are willing to pay that higher price, among other factors. By the way, loosely throwing terms around like socialist and Government-Industrial Complex and other loaded questions makes you look like an uneducated Neo-Confederate with an agenda

Supply and demand. Lots of people want to live in southern Ontario, in a standalone single-family home, and they're willing to pay for it. There are plenty of "little dumpy homes" elsewhere (including Ontario) where houses cost $300K or less.

By the way, there is no tax on the sale of a used home. There is GST payable by the first buyer on a newly-constructed home, but subsequent sales of that home are not taxable.

Stupid and short sighted as compared to what might I ask?

Living in a 300K, 3200 sq ft house financed on your visa card that you can't afford to heat in the winter?
Leasing your cars with no business to write those payments off against?
Buying a boat and trailer along with the pick-up to tow it and you cannot afford or refuse to buy medical insurance for your family?
Upwards of 50% of your population receiving some form of government assistance. Now THATS socialistic!
50% of your population paying no taxes at all? Taking your country 16 trillion dollars into debt with NO attempt being made to restrain that tendancy?
Sequestration a reality that essential servics are suspended but you're talking about going to war you can't afford over chemical weapons that you authorized or enabled the use of by Iraq when it was at war with it's own Kurdish citizens and the Iranians.
Wanna compare foreclosure rates of the two countries to really highlight the stupid and shortsighted or will you demur on that one?

http://realestate.aol.com/blog/2011/...osure-problem/

Would that be the kinds of stupid and shortsighted we're talking about?

Or would housing prices in Canada simply reflect the most simplistic form of a capitalist, non-socialist country; that of market supply and demand.

Are we done trolling now?

As opposed to keep the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in Ontario, where the vehicles are actually made. Because of much higher taxes, Lexus's that are actually MADE in Ontario are cheaper for a Canadian to by in Buffalo or Detroit; as I said, stupid and short sighted.

You're confusing me with someone else; I AGREE 100% with everything that you cited above. I believe in liberty, freedom, charity and volunteerism. I am adamantly opposed to a Huge Government Industrial Complex that controls every aspect of our lives from cradle to grave. I believe that YOU know what is best for you.

Ok, so why are you trolling the Canada forum with an OP full of loaded questions? This isn't the P&OC forum

Well see right there is where I misread you. You see, you said "I started a thread a several months ago about Lexus 350......"

I naturally assumed you had received all the relevant info you needed to deal with your "stupid and shortsighted" query from that thread and were not simply wishing to go over the same ground again related to cars built in Canada.

That is why I focused on your "small dumpy little homes", the "stupid and shortsighted" and the huge "government industrial complex" with my rejoinder.

I guess I was wrong. So either you weren't satisfied with the answers you got "several months ago", people could not be bothered answering a query posed with your arrogantly patronizing descriptors, or you just want to chum the waters a second time for your entertainment.

I guess you're not done trolling after all. Carry on.

If you sincerely believe that "you know what is best for you" then why is it unthinkable that Canadians would be more comfortable with a bigger government that provides more social services? Sure, there are benefits and downsides to that, but to automatically assume that you have all the answers to how a government should function simply because you're American is just ****ing ridiculous. So a car is cheaper is Ontario then it is in Buffalo. Some Ontario folk close to the Buffalo border will take advantage of the cheaper prices and others won't. Also keep in mind that salaries tend to be higher in Canada than in the U.S., so I'm sure there are plenty of Canadians who are able to pay the higher prices for a car or a house.

And just my personal opinion: as an above poster said, we Americans constantly lie to ourselves when we say we don't like government. We do, we just don't like paying for the stuff we need and pretend that it would automatically be better and cheaper if it were private and unregulated. Health insurance is a perfect example; it is just simply untrue to say "we have the power to x decision" when it comes to health care decisions. In an unregulated private health insurance market, you know who has the power? I'll give you a hint: it's not the person and it's not the government.

I don't know anyone who says this; you're confusing "no government" with a limited government that controls every aspect of our lives from cradle to grave. I believe that YOU know what is best for you, not some elite bureaucrat.
