Do people in northern Ontario feel western alienation at all? Parts of Ontario are actually closer to Canada's west coast than its east coast and it's sparsely populated like the western provinces. It seems like it's quite common for people in northern Ontario to move to Alberta and British Columbia too.

Northern Ontarians can feel frustrated, ignored and misunderstood by the south of the province (where more than 90% of the province lives) but this doesn't make them more similar or linked to Western Canada. Almost the entire region is entirely Ontario-oriented.

Even Thunder Bay which is the NW-most large city in Ontario is fairly Ontario-oriented.

The only places where there is more of western and prairie orientation is when you get really far into the NW around Kenora and Dryden. There you feel it.

But not anywhere else.

Well, we've talked about letting parts of northwestern Ontario join us to spare them the shame of being part of Ontario. Ontario city wants to secede, join Manitoba - Canada - CBC News

Winnipeg is the city that separates the east and the west. East of Winnipeg is Eastern Canada, West of Winnipeg is Western Canada. Or at least the Manitoba/Ontario border is what separates it which is right around the area where the flat prairie land turns into forests and lakes. But definitely none of Ontario is considered "Western Canada".
