This isn't surprising at all. We share a continent, and there are 350 million hungry consumers down there.

Very surprising, seeing how much Canadians seem to detest the US and Americans in general.

We don't detest them, we just don't want to be them, and do what we can to assert sovereignty when we can in the context of the political and cultural hegemony of a powerful neighbour. That is not the same as hate, they are our allies, partners, and we have a natural trading relationship. We are proactive about facilitating that partnership and often take the lead on measures that promote trade and bilateral relationships, like paying for 100% of and building the new bridge to Detroit.

that only means trade with US is far more important to Canada than the other way. Nothing to do with "proactive".

The US will be fine if not trading with Canada(19% export, 15% import with Canada), but Canada will be absolutely devastated if not trading with the US. This is why Canada is paying 100%. Let's not sugar-coat it.

If Canada is being proactive, it would be trading more with a lot more countries in the world, instead of the lazy approach of always relying on the US economy.

It's like you deliberately misread what I wrote. I said Canada was proactive about maintaining partnerships with the US!!! Because, as we both said, Canada is very reliant on that relationship. I was responding to a comment that suggested Canadians hated America and viewed it as an enemy. Clearly not or there'd be the sort of barriers to free trade that existed pre-NAFTA.

There isn't a reason to go out of our way to not trade with the U.S. I do believe trade with the U.S has gone down quite a bit over the last few decades in relative terms (it was as high as 85 or 88 percent of our exports in the past), but it stands to reason that Canada will rely more on the U.S for trade given the the sheer size of each economy. What benefit is there to say that one relies more on the other for trade when it is obvious that both countries would be hit without trading with the other but sure Canada relies more, big deal. Every relationship is going to have a balance of power on one side more than the other in most cases, there isn't really a good alternative to the U.S in terms of a main trading partner.. It largely makes sense. Is there more reliable partners Canada should rely upon for trade than the United States? As much as people on C/D level this sort of Anti-Americanism claim against Canadians, the truth is most of us have no qualms being closely linked with it in all manner of things.

If in the extremely unlikely event that trade would just cease - well sure it would be devastating but not impossible to overcome.. There would be a vacuum so you work to fill that back up.. Its an opportunity cost that we don't trade more with other nations because we already have a solid, large and stable trading relationship - if that ended than we'd deal.

Do you really think the average Canadian income would be higher if we gave the U.S the boot as a trading partner?

I'm beginning to think our favourite past time in C/D is playing 'what if' scenarios and more to the point what if scenarios with more unlikely probabilities..

It's only the favourite pastime of a very select few that enjoy picking nits while the rest of us are content to allow the current to perform the major motivational task of moving the commerce barge .
