Chillax dude. It's a nice fun article in the travel section, not front page BBC World News.
True but... the stereotype about Canadians being polite is not just related to that BBC article.
Another source of stereotypes is the reserved, soft-spoken character of many (Anglo-)Canadians. A lot of people seem to interpret this as "classiness", especially placed in contrast to their neighbours, Americans and Quebecers, who tend to be louder and more exuberant.

Too many generalizations going on here.. Regardless, whatever contrast that may be percieved is probably fading away by the generation. The Victorian era fading away too.... go figure....
In any event Hobbes comment was meant more as a 'dig' than anything else.. If you haven't noticed - he isn't a 'fan' of English Canadians.. Its not just a cultural thing - he's just not a fan of English Canadians period and its probably not just a historical thing it is seemingly in perpetuity (that is most certainly the impression I get from him post after post after post) and like any widespread judgement, observation or conclusion of a whole swath of people it is always rooted in something that is unfortunate.
This is a good example of the all too typical nonsense that makes it's way on to the BBC. Canadians aren't particularly nice. Unless if by nice you mean you cold, reserved, and standoffish.
Anglo Canadians have no other merits to stand on. They aren't inventive. They have no culture. They are forced to make something up to feed their national mythos. Since they have nothing else they make up positive attributes that are wholly opinion and subjective. Like being "nice". That's all that it is.

Jeez Louise; an article written by an American, published by the BBC and now we're getting this crap again?
It's a "stereotype", it's an "exaggeration", it's a faux attempt to simulate a non-existant "culture"; yep it's all those dastardly anglo-Canadian things rolled into a nice little package for those who cannot rag on English Canada enough to satisfy a disaffected contrariness.
