Is rice a popular staple food in Canada, even though it isn’t grown there (wild rice is a distant relation)?

Speaking of wild rice, if this is how it is harvested in Canada, it must fetch top dollar.

I don't know how popular rice is as a staple food in the rest of Canada but it's always been a very popular staple food in my province for as long as I can remember. A lot of it is consumed, especially in the lower mainland. There are soooo many different types of rice imported from around the world and available in our stores.

Rice can be grown in Canada. In southern BC we have the right kind of milder climate, water and land conditions for growing some types of white rice but the appropriate type of land to be flooded as paddies is mostly put to use for cranberry bogs instead. There is a much higher global demand for Canadian cranberry exports than there would be for Canadian rice and BC is one of Canada's top producers and exporters of cranberries.

Another thing for Canadian growers to deal with is that in Canada there are restrictions imposed on importing white rice crop seed from other countries. However, there is a single small rice paddy farm right here in the Fraser Valley, about 30 miles away from me, where sake rice and table rice is grown and they do produce their own crop seed on their farm so there are no seed restrictions for them. It's a relatively small enterprise but they are doing well. https://tourismabbotsford.ca/abbotsf...dies-thriving/

Apparently (or at least according to the above website) the Abbotsford farm is presently the only white rice producer in Canada (they also grow brown rice too) but there are also several trials presently being conducted in southern Ontario for large scale commercial growing purposes.

Virtually everyone in Canada has eaten rice before. Obviously the Asian immigrants will eat it in abundance, which is about half of the friends/former roommates I'm close enough to know their eating habits, but Canadians of European descent eat rice decently often too. For them, it's not a daily staple, but it's still something I think most Canadians would eat at least a couple times per month. Ultimately I don't think whether or not food is grown locally is that much of a factor for Canadians. We eat plenty of bananas, oranges, cane sugar, avocados and peanuts that are imported from other countries.

My family eats rice 4-5 times a week. From what I gather it's increasingly substituted for potatoes in many people's diets.

All kinds of rice.

I use Aroborio for making risotto.

Basmati when making Indian or Thai, sometimes Jasmine rice.

Long grain white rice for many types of food

Brown rices and wild rices as well.

Sticky rice I usually eat when out.

I eat rice at least twice a week.

We have rice once a week.

We're having rice tonight, as a matter of fact, with some leftover pork roast and mixed veggies.

Is that another way of saying “Chinese restaurant”?
