I had a civics and careers class here in Sudbury that was mandatory in grade ten, so that was (I think) between the fall of 2008 and summer of 2009 somewhere. From what little I remember, we talked about things that were more general to Canada than provincial. I remember we stayed on capital and corporal punishment systems for awhile.

Oh! And the teacher was fired for sexual assault.

In elementary school in Quebec from grades 1 to 6 to have Univers social which covers history, geography and society in general.

In secondary you have Géographie and then you have Histoire et éducation à la citoyenneté.

Oh, nice, that must be new then, when I went we had the geography class but not those elementary school courses or the citizenship class in high school.

You are lucky to be able to impart this Canadian hero's story to your kids, i'll bet most Canadian kids have never even heard the mans name.

Another fairly recent change (10-15 years ago) was the substitution of Religion (i.e. Roman Catholic, attended by 70-95% of people) / Morale (i.e. the rest, with a bored educator, "discussing" sharing/respect/etc to kill time) for the neutral Éthique et culture religieuse. Can't say that my kids learn a lot in these classes but they do get a sense that religious adherence is culture- or tradition-based rather than "only Christians are normal".
