not to mention there is no jobs for them.

I remember 8 years ago many swore if Obama became president, they would move. How many did? Words are cheap. It is not like the US president has a lot of power. He doesn't.

Trump is not as frightening as some may think because he doesn't get along with Congress; many of his promises require Congressional approval to implement.

Unless said people fleeing the US came from northern states themselves, in which case weather won't be what will make them reconsider but the immigration procedures.

What I could see, however, and especially since the exchange rate is now in their favor, is an increase in US students applying (and attending!) Canadian universities, especially for undergraduate study. Graduate school is another deal altogether.

I plan on visiting Cape Breton Island on my way to Newfoundland late this summer to early fall. I figure I will have really good weather and a very enjoyable drive. I am looking forward to this trip.

I think the weather is like it was in northern New Hampshire 20 years ago. the biggest difference is Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are all enough further north to substantially reduce sunlit hours. This would offset their location near the Gulf Stream relative warmth. The result is probably a wet Fall, bitter cold and snowy Winter, wet and chilly Spring and Cool summer. Sounds OK to me.

I would gladly move there if Trump wins.

I would prefer having Trump move there after he realized that being president of the US required actual work.

It's a bit isolated, even by Maritime standards... the people there really are one of a kind, they're a very independent bunch.

My mother always swore that they were also much taller than people in the rest of the Maritimes. True or no? I'm not sure.

Books are a great way to get into the brains of the region. One of my favourite authors was born in Cape Breton, Alistair Macleod. He wrote about it in a great short story collection, "The Lost Salt Gift of Blood" and in a novel "No Great Mischief" that won the Dublin International literary award. Lynn Coady, another well-known writer, grew up in Cape Breton.

Default Americans afraid of CBI weather?

This has just tickled me. I love the light-heartedness of it, and have since been reading a lot about CBI. I now have it very close to the top of my bucket list at least to visit.
The people, and the weather sound wonderful.
Oh, and contrary to popular belief (at least on this thread) it is much milder there than great portions of the US. And is in no way brutal, LOL Seriously?

I wish I could post comparisons of places I have lived that have been -40F WITHOUT wind chill. It looks like CBI has never gone lower than 4F in history. Relatively balmy. And never mind the amount of snow, yawn...
And I have lived in the 2 least populated states in the US, and understand isolation.

They don't fiddle with their fiddling traditions, that's for sure.

Btw, don't know why I can't edit my post, but I did find that CBI has had a record low (not sure where of -26) so 4 might be the annual low. Still not harsh in my book.

And I consider NYC mild winter, not joking, but it really is similar. Good point Ironc4t!
