No. We lived in the suburbs. The exodus from the city was due to the economic struggles of the city, which I've already addressed. What's your point?

Again, what is YOUR experience there?

Detroit is a great place to visit for those who are interested in the decay of a city.

Detroit is a place where people do not want to live. The crime rate is the highest in the country, and hundreds of thousands of people who used to call Detroit home have left because the city is no longer fit for normal life. This is widely known outside of Detroit, and nothing said by people who no longer live in Detroit will convince people that it is a great city.

I give up.

Honest to God, you'd fight with a wet paper bag, Lieneke.

I have never said that it's a "great city." I have my opinions about Detroit. I had my reasons for wanting to leave. But those reasons had NOTHING to do with the quality of the schools/education, safety, attractiveness, opportunity, or crime rates of the Metro area as a whole. Nothing.

And there ARE people who choose to live there who would, and do, disagree with my reasons. There ARE people -- intelligent, highly-educated, well-travelled, successful - who love living there. I didn't, but that doesn't mean I think people who do are wrong.

Different strokes. Do you get that concept?

At least we now know that Detroit is a preferred vacation spot for some, and that Canadians love people from the US.

It's possible that one of the children who post here was unable to grasp the concept, and lept to the assumption that researching a city meant google street view.
"You can travel to Detroit without leaving your computer" is literally suggesting that google street view is the same as traveling... and yes Detroit is not a pretty city at all but thats what makes it cool and the whole vibe of the city is pretty cool .... i recommend going to Detroit to see the architecture, casinos, the urban farms, the art, etc.. no i don't recommend live there with your family (no one here is suggesting that) but you can still enjoy visiting places that are not so pretty and that are pretty run down..

It's settled! Some people view Detroit as an ideal vacation spot. I understand. That's great! As I posted, I see many drawbacks to vacationing in Detroit, but clearly many don't see those points as drawbacks. Different points of view are what makes the world go round. That's a good thing.

For clarification, when I suggest that it is possible to travel to a location without leaving the computer, and follow with a link to a website with a description accompanied with many photos, I do not mean that it is possible to travel via "google street view". I mean, as should have been clear in my comment, that it is possible to view photos and websites about that city to get a feel for the city.

Transforming and simplifying my comment to align it with "google street view" was at the level of suggesting that I am a "child" - not exactly the quality of discussion that I hope for.
