I find the Alberta Oil sands are a convenient target for environmentalists to vent their frustration at global warming, especially in N.A. If Alberta oil sands didn't exist it wouldn't make a lick of difference to the world, we'd still be in the situation we are in. That said, to deny what scientists/climatologists are telling us about global warming and trying to dismiss it as some sort of conspiracy just defies logic and common sense.
The Democrats under Jimmy Carter tried to argue that the U.S. and Canada didn't have much in the way of exploitable hydrocarbon deposits. This justified their micromanagement of pricing in the industry. The tar sands and fracking having given lie to this agenda-laden assertion. So now they are trying to strangle the tar sands and fracking industry.

OPEC oil has been cumulatively far more destructive to the environment than N.A oil - by a looooooooong shot.

No question about it. Iraq's deliberate burning of Kuwaiti oil fields. The sabotage of Nigerian oil facilities. And while not in OPEC,m Russia? Need I say anything more?
This is horrible. An entire Canadian city, wiped out. We all know someone who's lived there or left for there at some point, I really feel for those who have lost everything they worked so hard to build. I'd hoped the physical city would long outlast the oil boom, and even oil itself, as a legacy of this period. I never would have expected something like this could happen. Where are we going to house all of these thousands of people in the short term?

People always pick on a larger target than a small one, much more effective. I consider myself an environmentalist but the biggest complaint I would have with the oil sands was there was such a rush to develop that they hardly let the lessons from one plant have time to be useful for the building of the next plant plus there was such a boom that it caused some social economic issues for people and even the governments.

I'm not going to disagree with you but it still bothers me that people can be so self serving and stupid. As if filling up your car with gas from Saudi Arabia is 'GREAT' for the environment meanwhile they are screaming fire and brimstone about the Alberta Oil Sands and how terrible they are.. Its nauseating.
Downside is that you're using natural gas to create your steam. There's zero chance that a nuclear reactor would ever be approved, but that is the ideal situation and placement for one.
Some of the 180 crew have developed a persistent cough, says firefighter Nick Waddington, president of the Fort McMurray branch of the International Association of Fire Fighters.
Results of lung and blood tests will be private. But Waddington predicts the firefighters will need ongoing support and possible treatment for serious illnesses over the next 10 to 20 years.
"Realistically, a lot of our guys, their lives are going to be shortened because of this incident,"

Inhaling massive quantities of burned wood is hazardous to your health. I will be applying to the newly "rejuvenated" research core for my Federal research grant.
