I am just surprised than an Italian teenager would write like you do in English. Or maybe you're not really an Italian teenager?

English isn't your first language either and you are pretty much at a native speaker level. Why would you think that others couldn't do the same especially if his first language is Italian which is close to French?

I am not really a typical case, though. I went to school in English, socialized in English, had my activities in English, even went to church in English, for much of my childhood and youth, in Ontario and the Maritimes.

Fair enough but he could be really enthusiastic and motivated with learning English and being academic in general. If he's complaining about pot smokers and drugs in school, he probably prefers to be in a highly academic and stimulating scholastic environment...

I have no idea what part of Toronto the OP lives in... but kids in Toronto mature pretty quickly. They aren't as sheltered as kids in a lot of other places. That's been my impression for at least two decades. Even kids from affluent families seem to be quite familiar with life in the city.

Just adding: does anyone else think that Toronto has a majority of parents with the "free range" approach to parenting? I could be mistaken, but teens seem to be fairly independent in T-dot.

It varries from family to family. I think parents here over schedule their kids too often. Ex a formal extra cirricular activity every night of the week. There is a fine line between well rounded and burnt out by 12.
