How long should bills, tax records and other related documents be kept?

I use to think that way until I noticed that at times I have been over billed for stuff and had to despute the charges.

Ex. - Like a noticed Rogers over charge me time and time again
- I once had a security system company double charge me for 6 months ( on one property I no longer owned)
- I have had credit cards compromised a few times ( ironically only after I got a chip card). You know something is up when you live in Ontarion and have 3 back to back $200 charges at a gas station in outside of Montreal.
- Also both myself and my husband are partial self employed. I have been aduited once before while I was in universtiy and it was a huge pain. I can not imagine how stressful that would be now .

Thanks for feedback and information. I am going to be having a shredding party this week! Time to reclaim my basement and create a wicked woman cave ! (Gym, spa style washroom with a tv and storage for my accessories ... oh yeah and a spot to hide... I mean put away my husband's tools)!
