Washington DC average high is more than 31C in July - that's indeed quite hot, possibly 30-40 days a year when you can't walk outside for long. Canadians tend to have this romanticized image of hot cities. It is really not that good (still beats the frigid winters for many reasons, but it sucks nevertheless).
I suspect that a lot of the searches coming from British IPs might not be from British citizens at all. They could be from newcomers to Britain, who will now be either unwelcome, or unemployed, or both. Maybe now they're thinking of moving further overseas for those reasons? Just a thought.
Canada and Australia are the top two destinations for Britons to immigrate. It's no stretch to think that its UK citizens that are looking.

True, but that's partly because my kids are off from school and activities in the summer.
It's not the case for some of my friends who are out skiing in Gatineau Park after dinner several nights a week.
