Well that might be in part why you would feel that way. That isn't entirely true either because there are certainly a fair share of conservatives up here. Which Canadians you surround yourself would have a lot more to do with how welcome you feel. Same thing with Canadians in the U.S. I as a liberal would and do feel more welcome in blue areas of the U.S than red because of ideology not the nation as a whole. I say this in loose and general terms but you introduced generality into the discussion. There are obviously many complex facets to this but the generalized statement that Americans are not welcome in Canada is patently untrue.

I thought Botti was a citizen?

My take, since I've encountered this before IN REAL LIFE LOL

Anyone can criticize anything they want, as long as they understand how that criticism is given, can make all the difference in it's effectiveness and reactions of those receiving it. If they say they don't care, well to me, their credibility is gone, since what is the purpose of the criticism in the first place if not to get people to care enough to perhaps enact change? If warranted.

The criticism also has to be logical. Complaining about the climate in Canada, after CHOOSING to move here makes one sound petty, and perhaps a person lacking some forethought. Reminds me of a woman I knew who visited Mexico and complained there were too many Mexicans.

One would have to go back and piece together all of Botti's posts to get the real picture. In fairness, I do remember posts praising Canada along with some that were to me, just plain silly and some that he never answered a simple question. Healthcare comes to mind.

Now to my real life experience. This is not to suggest that this is Botti. I have found over the years, that many of the people criticizing their new homeland, do it because they feel frustrated at not quite fitting in, as much as they did, or IMAGINED they did back home. Things back home take on a golden hue. The food was better, the skies bluer, the community spirit more intense, business done quicker etc.

Well, then we should address why you feel that way and what can be done to improve your perception.

If however, you're going to state something like my Vietnam vet, red neck buddy from Louisiana is famous for uttering along the lines of "Canada won't let me carry and defend myself", or "how did Canada go from being a frontier to a socialist nanny state in less than a hundred years?" I'm afraid I won't bother wasting my time.

I would hope you'll understand.

Great post. I really do think Botti wants Canada to be a better place and he does care for it (some may not always agree on that better) but well intentioned I think. Sometimes we say things as a reaction to what others say as opposed to how we feel in general.

Being British and living in Britain I have to say that I've not met anyone seriously considering emigrating to anywhere.

Some have said it in a quasi-humorous manner but that's your lot really. People will just get on with there lives as best they can and put up with the situation here, for good or ill.

There's also the fact that emigrating isn't particularly cheap especially when it is predicted that house prices will fall and interest rates will rise. Moving abroad doesn't make your mortgage disappear and raising the funds to buy when abroad whilst paying for a house back 'home' for most would be prohibitive.

I've applied for a working holiday visa (IEC) to Canada exactly because of this.
I'm still relatively young (28) and have nothing really keeping me in the UK, so seems like the perfect chance to try something new.

I'm horrified by what the referrendum has done to the country and I cannot see how Britain benefits from leaving in any way. The very, very best we can hope for is that things remain relatively unchanged, but I believe things will get a lot worse in the coming years.

Hatred and fear of immigrants, religions etc also seems to be in the rise fuelled by a right wing media. To have an MP brutally murdered on the street and the trial not even making the front few pages of the Mail is crazy.

Anyway, Canada and Canadians are well thought of around the world, so really hope I get through the application process!

The Berlin truck attack, and the government's release of the Tunisian who seems to be responsible, isn't something to trigger "hatred and fear?"

Well it certainly has among Americans such as yourself. I can't imagine choosing to live my life with hatred and fear. Sounds like a miserable way to live to me.

Brand_New, I hope you get your visa. Your age is the perfect time to explore options.
