I'm going to be visiting a friend in a few weeks in Hamilton. I got some Canadian currency and most of it is $100 dollar bills. I forget where I read it but I heard merchants don't like taking $100 bills due to counterfeiting issues. Should I try to get smaller bills before I visit or will I be OK? Thanks.

You'll be fine. If you have a problem, hit a bank and have the note broken. Easier to do there.

It US 100 dollar bills that they won't take, if they take USD at all. Most small stores don't like large denominations, so the advice to go to a bank to have them broken down is a good one.

I'd get 50's and 20's.

Most counterfeit issues for Canadian currency seem to have been resolved by the introduction of plastic banknotes. Some merchants still won't take $100 bills, true; but it is easy enough to go to any bank, and have then broken down into smaller denominations.

Service stations and grocery stores always take larger banknotes, so they're good places to get them "broken up".

Used Canadian $100s several times in the two trips I took this past year and never had a problem. Merchants accepted them without complaints. Canadian pennies on the other hand ...

I have seen the number of establishments that won't accept $50 or $100 decrease over the last couple of years.

Pennies are still legal tender and they must accept them.
