Like Bob Dylan he was more of a poet writer than singer. So few true poet writers in the music industry today who use words that exist in the English language instead of making up words to force a rhyme.
How did you guys get exposed to his music? For me that was the movie Pump Up the Volume with Christian Slater, so it was Everybody Knows. Then it's a bit of a blur, possibly First We Take Manhattan...

I think I found his poetry first in an anthology of Canadian poetry and that led me to his book of poetry and his novel, and that in turn led me to his music. My all-time favourite is Hallelujah but I also love Who by Fire and many, many more. I had noticed just a week or so ago that he has a new album out but I have not yet bought it. There are so many elements of the Psalms running through his music.

Listening to Suzanne as a child in the car with my father. Later, I lived with his brother's grandson and got to know a number of other Cohen's and started to listen to a lot more of the man's work.
I was not a fan of Leonard Cohen, and knew next to nothing about him, except that I'd reach for that dial to switch the station when I heard the opening chords of "Suzanne" begin to emerge.
I know. "If you can't say anything nice..." *
Well, he lived a good long life, and just recorded another album, didn't he? He was 82. May he RIP.
* I am still annoyed at his family/PR for delaying the announcement to Remembrance Day. It's something I will not forget, and it's made me regard the late Leonard Cohen in an unfavourable way, though it might not be his fault.

That's ridiculous. He didn't choose when he died and the family is allowed to bury him in whatever way they deem appropriate and make the announcement when they wish. Anyone who has ever lost a family member should know that. Remembrance Day would not be at the top of my mind if he were member of my family. I'd be too busy remembering.
