Because we are a tolerant nation we allow them to speak their language and practice their culture in their area just like other Canadian minorities. Quebeckers who get an education can speak fluent English its mostly in the countryside and the uneducated who continue speaking French. Any other questions?
Education is available to everyone in Quebec and is not directly correlated with learning or knowing English any more than knowledge of French is correlated with being educated in Anglo-Canada.
Over 95% of the population of Quebec can speak French, and the vast majority of them use it every single day - whether they are highly educated or not.
I don't get why people have a problem with a multi-lingual society. Knowledge (not just of another language) is a good thing.. never bad. Heck I'd want my kids to speak more than 2 languages come to think of it,.
Your statement, "they are allowed to vote who gets to be president", shows an ignorance so great that there is no sense at all in discussing anything Canadian with you!
Troll is spelled the same way in English and French.... that he can understand; I as well read "vote for President" and I knew the OP was not serious about engagement.
After 5 years in Canada and living in Quebec what I haven't understood yet it's the relationship between Canada and Quebec.
First, I thought there were no differences between them. A French Canadian or an English Canadian is still Canadian, dah... Then I learnt there were two official languages in Canada : French and English and only one in Quebec : French.
So, I thought there might be a "cultural war" between English speakers and French speakers. Canadians hate Quebecers. Quebecers hate Canadians. And some Canadians might be really pissed off about "equalization payments" or funding bilingual programs in Vancouver for ten Frenchy. At the same time, Quebecers might be in "resistance" against the Canadian-occupied. They refuse to speak english. Even if they understand english, they will answer you in french, etc...
And now, I'm only confused about the relationship between Canada and Quebec. For example, Justin Trudeau is from Quebec. A lot of Canadians don't care and vote for him and really love his job so far. But in Quebec people say it's a "traitor" and not only because of his politic about Muslim people and refugees. But because he will answer questions in English to French journalists.
So, I think the best way to deal with this issue is not talking about it and to pretend it doesn't exist because it's a hornet nest. And I remember a survey about Quebec where the questions was : "Which people do you think is the closest of Quebec ?" And the answers were : 35% to English-Canadians, 33% to French from France, 32% to Americans.
Now, I'm on my way to get citizenship. And my personal opinion is I'm Canadian. Even if I live in Quebec, it's really important for me to be bilingual and not to be a snob to English Canadians and ignore 3 quarters of my country. Even if I'm from France and I don't really need English. It's my personal way of showing respect to this great country we call Canada. And I think I won't understand until my death that love/hate relationship between Canada and Quebec.

Truly, there is no one right answer. It's a complex issue and individuals have their own very different feelings about it. Canadians aren't monolithic - English or French. I for one think your approach and perspective is the right one. I am a proud Canadian and a federalist who believes that if we try to build bridges, rather than walls, and try to listen to the better angels of our natures, to try to understand one another and act with respect, that Canada will become an ever greater federation.
Yes, people are allowed to speak whatever language they want, but everyone is still required to learn English. Signs are in English, police and courts speak English etc. Quebec is more like a separate country within Canada. They have their own culture, language and customs. They are allowed to vote who gets to be President but they can't even speak the language of the country they live in. They can't read the newspapers. You don't see a problem with that?
You must have not been in the Desert Southwest that much. In airports they speak in English and Spanish on the intercoms. You can order in English or Spanish at restaurants.
I don't see anything wrong with that. French people have been a part of Canada since it started and it is well understood with the majority of people that Canada has two official languages (French and English).

I have never understood this. The official language in Canada is English. Why do Canadians allow Quebecers people to speak French? Why do they allow them to have signs etc in French? Just force them to learn the language of their own country. I don't understand Quebecers are even allowed to vote when they can't understand what the politicians are saying.
It probably has its basis in the Treat of Paris of 1763.
