Is President Obama well thought of in Canada or is he disliked there? What do people think of his health care program there? Are relationships better, worse or the same was they were under GW Bush?
Good article. Some of the news outlets down here give the impression that Canadians hate Obama because of Keystone.
Canadians generally love Obama - we remember the other guy. That doesn't mean that Canadians always agree with Obama's political decisions - I think there's a sense here that he is forced to be more conservative than he is, and there's no reason for him to have Canada's best interests at heart - he's your president, so at times his decisions may not be the best for Canada but that doesn't translate into not liking him. We understand, imo, that he's doing his job.
Canadians love Obama. Most of us hated George Bush and were in complete shock how a man like that could be elected into office. Obama on the other hand is a complete turn-a-around for the US. He is generally well liked here.
He's a little less well regarded in this part of the country. Mainstream opinion seems to be that his presidency has been something of a failure, not to mention his politics being somewhat out of step with Alberta's.
However, even in this bastion of conservatism, I don't see the vitriol that seems to come from US conservatives (even among the more fringe elements up here). Opinion seems to vary between naive and generally incompetent (though most will grant he's a pretty good speaker).
All of the British Columbians that I've had discussions with about American politics feel more favourable about Obama. We don't love him but we like him a lot more than the past few presidents that America's had. He is certainly more sensible and has more fore-thought than anything the Republican opposition has to offer as a candidate for the coming election. I hope Obama gets elected again in November.
I don't know enough about his new health care program to offer an opinion about it but I do feel that something needs to be done to improve accessibility to affordable health care for ALL Americans. At least Obama is trying to do something about that, so that's in his favour.
I think government relationships between Canada and America are better now than they were before Obama was elected but there is still a great deal more room for improvement.
Every one i talk to up here think favorably of President Obama and like him a lot more than his predecessor, Obamas academic accomplishments are impressive and to most i talk with think America would be hard pressed to find any one more qualified for the job.
As an an American ex-pat i probably speak more about the issue than most of my friends and co-workers would like but i do come away from conversations with them with their questioning why so many Americans truly hate this President and why his opposition are doing everything possible to obstruct his efforts to accomplish anything,The usual rationale i hear from fellow Canadians for all the hate and obstructionism is they got issues with black people down there and he's black.
Americas reluctance at joining the rest of the world and accepting some form of Universal healthcare is incomprehensible to most Canadians.
Canadians i talk to think products like Limbaugh,Beck and Fox are just satire kinda like the journalistic equivalent of professional wrestling and i usually get a big REALLY? when i tell them that people actually take these talking heads seriously.
Most Canadians i talk to are for the most part uninterested in the constant American pre-occupation with the subject and dont understand how such a boring topic as politics can keep Americans obsessed with the subject on TV , Radio and forums 24/7.
As for my pre-occupation with Obama and American politics here on the Political section my wife and kids are unanimous in there thoughts on the matter,Dad why dont you get out of that garbage can and go get a life..
To sum up, it seems Canadians generally like the Democrat Presidents and not so much the Republican Presidents, They arent going to like Romney if he gets in as the guy just comes across to Canadians as empty and vacuous with no solutions to anything.
I realize a lot of points in my post can be argued with but thats not the point of the topic, its what my circle of Canadian friends think about Obama and a few of the major issues.
I'd add that the average Canadian attitude towards Obama care is basically as follows. We know that for the most part your current system looks awful and we're also familiar with the downsides of our own but greatly prefer it to what you've got. When we hear an American president wants to fix your system, we think "great idea!" When we hear he wants to fix it by doing some complicated thing with American medical insurance plans none of us have ever had to buy, we stop understanding exactly what it is. As such, most Canadians I meet think that it's good that Obama wants to do something about your health care system but for the most part we have no idea what Obama care is except that his has something to do with insurance. The main argument against it coming from its opposition is that it's socialist, and that obviously doesn't strike a chord with us, so we hear what seems like no strong arguments against it so it looks okay as a result.
