Germany and Sweden have been overrun with "refugees". What exactly are they refugees from who knows. But the cultures there have changed big time and not for the good.

I am worried that in 2017 Canada will be the next western nation to become the destination of a tidal wave of migrants. I don't think the gov't is going to be ready for this if it happens. But will it happen? Is geography going to protect Canada from suffering the same fate of Germany and Sweden?

Personally I am not 100% but enough has happened already to think that the possibility is there. Just thought it would be a good discussion to have.

No, I don't think it will happen. The refugee situation that's happening in the eastern hemisphere is a different scenario from what could happen in Canada, for both political and geographic reasons.

If Canada ends up becoming the destination of a tidal wave of refugees it won't be a mish mash of desperate refugees from the eastern hemisphere arriving in overcrowded boats from across the Atlantic. It will be climate refugees coming up north overland from the rest of the Americas. That's still at least 20 years away before it gets bad enough that there'd be a tidal wave of people escaping to Canada, if it happens at all.

Just my opinion.

No, because Canada has an entire ocean separating it from the problems of the middle-east and Africa.

Canada does not share a Schengen style border with it's immediate neighbour so those crossing and claiming refugee status do so under a variety of restrictions and agreements between the two countries.

Claiming refugee status after arriving through any other port of entry is a formal process that includes an in depth look into the person's history and background. The less you can determine, the less likely it is that 'status' will be granted.

It is incumbent upon the person claiming refugee status that they prove where and what they are claiming to be a refugee from. This requires furnishing some personal history and background.

Your fears are not without some foundation but perhaps a bit premature.

Canada's plan for 2017 is to admit 300,000 new immigrants of which 40,000 or 13% are expected to be refugees. This number of refugees would represent a decline of 28% from the previous year.

Humm, completely different situations. Refugees from North Africa and the Middle East won't easily get to come to Canada like they do to Europe, nor do they have much incentives to. So I wouldn't worry about Canada being "overrun" by refugees. There is a huge ocean in between.

Cross the Atlantic by boat?? First, how big do those boats have to be in order to store enough food? How do they get to hve access to these boats? Two, what's the point of crossing the Atlantic risking 100 times the danger to Canada, when Europe is just closeby with equal standard of living?

Also, you are exaggerating things in Germany and sweden too.

As to "climate refugees", Please, let us keep them out. We don't want a bunch of American refugees destroying Canadian culture.

Do Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, or for that matter Winnipeg or Calgary or Ottawa, look anything like Sweden to you right now? We're already far more diverse that Malmo or Bavaria. So I don't think riots by visible minorities will be likely anytime soon. This fear-mongering is so ridiculous. If anyone's going to have protests it would be First Nations, which they'd be justified in having... so much lunatic panicking from a small disgruntled handful of Canadian white folks.

I thought it was obvious - the OP is an American. I actually checked his past posts to confirm that.

I think that you are worried about something that has already happened. Follows are the list of nations according to United Nations report for number of "migrants" by state for countries with over 2 million migrants.

Although Canada is 7th on the list, a total migrant population of 7.8 million is well over 20% of the nations population.

Those numbers for USA, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, France and Sweden are all well under 20% of the population of those respective nations.

Some nations have a much higher percentage than Canada. Australia for instance is much more than 20% of the population.
