Looking at Canadian society and politics, it is clear that in many different ways, Canada is much more progressive than its close ally south of the border, from issues such as health care, levels of religiosity, usage of marijuana, gun ownership, and trust in government. As the two countries are right next to each other and appear to have an extremely similar culture upon first glance, how did these countries diverge so starkly on these issues?
I wonder if Canada's different system of government or a (slightly) different history has led to them being more progressive.
I like the word progressive as it denotes progress the opposite of which is regressive. And while Canada progresses into the future America seems to be wanting to regress
to some time in the past under the illusion that it was a greater time.
IMO America is dying, filled with hate and incompetence in its leadership.
Correct question is why is the US (at least half of it) is backward compared with the rest of the rich and developed world. I simply couldn't understand why in 2017 many Americans still think Jesus is a big deal.

Not really. For a big country with such a huge population, America is doing pretty well. Exceptional even.
Its what the people voted for. Canadians wanted a progressive country so politicians began offering progressive policies. Many of the programs were put in place after politicians looked at what the USA did, took the good parts and threw away the bad, or they did the exact opposite.
Also the fact that Canada has a dual cultural history means that people are accustomed to compromise and negotiation, or something like that.

I also think American politicians are less likely to listen to their constituencies. The big financial contributions are influential in America.
Because the US was founded on freedom for the individual, not for the collective. Collectivists will never understand that ideal.
While America is "failing" the world's greatest innovators are still lining up to come here. Strange.
So many of the luxuries, medicines and innovations that collectivists enjoy came from and continue to come from the United States, yet we are failing. LOL
I wonder what Canada and "tolerant" Canadian attitudes would be like if it had Mexico on its southern border rather than the US. It's very easy to throw stones when you're geographically insulated by the US from the developing world in your hemisphere. Would you have thrown the flood gates open like they did in Europe?
We have a President who is driving liberals to light their hair on fire and much of the world doesn't much like him, so now that means we're failing.
